Stepping Out
When Peggy's mother asks if he's spanish and Panchito says he's Mexican, Peggy's mother acts scared. When the dog starts barking she takes that as a chance to kick Panchito out. Peggy's parents were being racist. They must've thought Panchito was going to hurt peggy.
Back to the Fields
I don't think the 'Teenagers' of today have the same work ethic or values as they did in Panchito's time. I don't know anyone that wakes up at 7:00 AM and goes to bed an hour before that, or anyone that would put up with working all that time while dealing with a father like Panchito's, yelling and smoking and pill-popping.
Children in the Fields
Put yourself in the shoes of a farmworker youth. Imagine working 14 hours in harsh conditions. What would be the hardest thing about this life for you?
I think the hardest thing about that life would be staying awake so long working. I'd probably end up falling asleep on my feet.
One of the farmworker kids says, "After all the work is over, nobody remembers the people. Or the children who worked. The farmworker is forgotten." Do you agree with this statement? Do these videos change the way you think about fruits and vegetables? Explain.
I agree with the statement. I've never gone to a restaurant and heard anyone talking about where the food came from, I mean, who does? I don't think the videos will really change the way I think about fruits and vegetables, because no matter who it comes from, it's food. I might think differently of how the food is harvested, but food is food.
Panchito's family sticks together, they help each other through poverty, and there is a high level of respect. Do you think Pancho made the right choice? Defend your answer.
I think Panchito made the right choice. If he had not gone to college, the cycle of poverty would've continued with Panchito. By going to college, Panchito ended up giving himself a better chance of not ending up in poverty when he grew up.
